UK Cold To Linger Into Mid-April, May End Warmer Than Normal (Includes Video)

As a cold surface high continues to build down over Scotland from Norway, this has shut down the persistent snow shower activity which has brought several fresh coverings all the way west to Glasgow. The high is also providing clearer skies and lighter winds, this promotes a slight rise in daytime temperatures but even colder nights than of late. The temperature plummeted to -10.3C last night in Braemar, Aberdeenshire and according to ITV’s Laura Tobin, this makes for the UK’s coldest Easter on record. However I am suspicious about this claim given there is no mention elsewhere about that low making the record books. According to the Met Office, the coldest UK Easter was March 31, 1986 when the temperature hit -9.8C in Inverness-shire. Certainly if you include Good Friday and not solely Easter Sunday, then this morning’s low would make history. In saying all that, tonight and indeed early Sunday morning will likely reach -10C and so if it hasn’t already, the March 31st, 1986 record is very much threatened. [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level1)]Like I said, days although cold, especially in the wind and where the snow cover remains, outwith wind/snow and there’s plenty of sunshine, it feels comfortable. Nights will remain very cold well into next week though.

Speaking of next week, please check out the video below which discusses next week and the slight chance of yet more organised with the presence of low pressure to the south of the UK which could feed moisture in from the south as well as cold air from the east.

The pattern remains stubborn and until we get that NAO/AO recovering to positive, then I don’t see us returning to a normal temperature pattern for the time of year. Mid-April is when I believe the flip comes and given these wild and extreme blocking patterns, we could well see this cold break and all of a sudden we’re into a summer setup with a nice ridge pumping warmth up from the Azores. Sometimes you can go from persistent cold which lasts weeks to all of a sudden above normal. Remember by mid-April, the sun will be strong and nights very short.
