TUES 13 NOV: UK & IRELAND REGIONAL FORECAST

Scotland

Temperatures throughout Scotland are rising to a good 4-8C above seasonal averages and in some Moray coastal locations, an impressive 10C above normal with a high topping 16C this afternoon at Kinloss. It’s all thanks to a long fetched, deep sub-tropical flow which has roots all the way back to the tropics. Unfortunately with this very balmy air flow comes a lot of low cloud, rain, persistent drizzle along with mist and fog, all courtesy of the moisture rich air and of course the wetter air holds more heat too.

Last night saw temperatures steadily rise to the warmest levels of the day and then they levelled off, so it stayed at between 10-12C all night across most areas. If those were readings during the daytime, even those would be above normal!

The wettest is always in the west but with the hills capturing a lot of this cloud and rainfall, eastern areas are in somewhat of a rainshadow and it is here, with a downslope wind, the best of the weather and warmth is to be had in more north and eastern parts.

Tonight remains wet and blustery but mild once again. Expect a very similar night tonight as last night, particularly in the southwest. Rains will slowly slide south tonight while it dries out and clears in the north. This will allow temperatures to cool but further south from the Central Belt on down through Dumfries and Galloway, it’s cloudy, misty, murkey with persistent outbreaks of rain and temperatures holding at 10-12C, higher than the normal high for this time of year!

Wednesday will continue where today and tonight left off with the main rain band now positioned across the Central Belt on south and and tomorrow wears on the rain, strongest winds and mildest air will slowly sink south into northern England, eventually clearing by tomorrow evening, turning drier, clearer and cooler.

Thursday will be much brighter, drier and cooler with highs in single figures for most as the flow turns northerly on the backside of the southbound front.

England

After a generally cloudy but dry and mild day throughout England with highs rising to unusual mid-November levels of 12-14C with even a 16C recorded this afternoon at Kew Gardens in central London, this will set the scene for much of the same tonight although cloudcover will thicken enough to produce some light and patchy rain or drizzle here and there. The moisture rich southwest flow, keeping the cloud, drizzle going as well as the warmth will also bare host to mist and fog. Lows tonight will struggle to get below 10C, perhaps staying at 12C for some.

Through Wednesday and rather than the front over Scotland sinking south bringing a band of rain, it weakens and so most of the country, after a gloomy start, should brighten and with sunshine, we should see temperatures climb to between 12-14C, slightly cooler than today.

Tomorrow night will see clearer skies and so expect widespread mist and fog to develop.

Thursday will start off cooler with plenty of mist and fog which may be slow to burn off. Highs down on today and tomorrow at 9-11C.

Wales

Today has been generally cloudy and mild but fairly dry for most areas. Probably the most noteworthy aspect along the coast has been the wind strength, according to the BBC Weather, a wind gust of 59 mph was recorded at Capel Curig while Aberdaron recorded a gust to 48 mph earlier today. These howling southwest winds are blowing hard on the underside of the frontal boundary and this is what is transporting all the unusually warm air up over the UK.

Highs today have widely climbed to between 12-14C and tonight, it’s much like last night with plenty of cloud cover thickening up, enough to produce some outbreaks of rain. Expect mist and fog also and lows to drop no lower than 7 or 8C in the north, 10-12C in the south.

Tomorrow will be much like today, brightening up through the afternoon with little or no showers around. Highs will be a degree or two down on today.

Northern Ireland

A wet, breezy and mild day across Ulster today will see rains continue through tonight and into tomorrow. Following highs of 12-14C this afternoon, lows dip to only 10C for most thanks to the southwest flow, cloud and rain. Tomorrow looks to see a wet morning give way to a brighter afternoon, once the front begins to sink south and skies clear some, then temperatures should begin to slowly fall away. This gives way to a clearer, drier but cooler and mistier night with dense fog likely to form for many areas.

Ireland

The wettest weather has always favoured western and northern parts of Erie today but as this afternoon wore on, we see outbreaks of rain along with thicker cloud expand into more southern areas. Tonight will be a damp but mild one with outbreaks of rain here and there. Mist and fog could also form in the mild, damp air.

Through tomorrow and it should brighten some, temperatures rise to 11-13C.
