Heading out for Guy Fawkes Night on Monday evening? Here is my official UK Bonfire Night Forecast 2012.
Scotland
In recent years, Bonfire Night in Scotland has been a mixed bag with showers and mild temperatures. Last year’s was clear, dry and cold and this year (Monday night) looks to follow in last year’s footsteps. [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level1)]
So, as you, your family or friends head out to your community bonfire, be sure to wrap up warm as skies will be clear and temperatures cold. You may find temperatures down to around 3-4C as the sun sets but as the evening wears on, the temperature will drop and frost and icy patches may form, especially where skies are very clear. Have the ice-scraper handy for when heading back to the car. By 9-10pm, many inland parts will have a temperature of around 0C or slightly below.
England
After a wet 24 hours for many across the country, particularly southern parts, Bonfire Night 2012 should be mostly clear and that means wrap up warm. With the exceptions of a few areas of stubborn cloud, mainly down nearest the Channel and North Sea coasts, elsewhere it should be dry, clear and cold. Perfect conditions for firework viewing. Sunset temperatures should hover 6-8C in the south where skies are cloudier, 3-5C where clearer, especially in northern areas. By around 9-10pm, temperatures from Cumbria to the Midlands will be down to 2-3C, near 0C in places. In towns and cities expect 3-5C. Milder down towards London.
Wales
Heading out and about across Wales for Bonfire Night, following a rather wet, windy and miserable past day or so, it should be largely fine, dry and settled. Be sure to wrap up as temperatures will fall away throughout your evening beneath clear, starry skies. Temperatures at sundown should be around 5-7C and by the time your heading for home between 9-10pm, temperatures may be as low as 3-4C, with some spots nearer 1-2C for light frost around.
Northern Ireland
For Northern Ireland, it’s looking like a largely fine and dry night with long clear spells, which will make you want to wrap up nice and warm. Sundown temperatures should be between 4-6C but as the night wears on, a light frost should be developing, so be sure to have your ice-scraper handy for when leaving the display. Temperatures by 9-10pm will be near 2-3C with some spots already down to freezing.
Summary
While the bulk of the UK looks to see a clear and cold night, there is always a chance of an odd isolated shower. With low temperatures, any shower may produce sleet, even to low levels. However, these will very likely be limited to only the highest ground where it will fall as snow.
