Following highs only in the 70s yesterday, today is going to be a shock to the system throughout the Northeast as temperatures soar well into the 90s. Factor in high dew points and it’s gonna feel between 98-105 today from Washington DC to Boston. The heat core which has be migrating east throughout the past several days, breaking heat records on it’s way is now centered over the Appalachains. Gone is that cooling, brisk onshore flow which kept things cool over recent days, the heat is here and it means business. Here are my forecast highs for the major cities today.
Boston 95°
New York 96°
Philadelphia 97°
Baltimore 97°
Washington 98°
As for tomorrow, heights rise further with 850mb temps up on today and so factoring in a west, southwest wind, warmer air mass in place with overnight lows struggling in the downtowns to get below 80° tonight which sets a warm base to start tomorrow morning’s heating process, here are my forecast numbers for the same cities tomorrow.
Boston 98°
New York 99°
Philadelphia 100°
Baltimore 100°
Washington 100°
Newark to the west of Manhattan and La Guardia to the east, both heavily urbanised with lots of concrete, may top out at 101° or 102° tomorrow while taking a run at 100° this afternoon.
While It’s Hot, It Ain’t 2011
Cold Front Sliding East To Bring Thundery Relief Late Friday, Significant Cooldown This Weekend

This ECMWF chart for Saturday shows the the front swept through the Northeast and the trough carving out, drawing much cooler, more refreshing air down from Canada (Map courtesy of ECMWF)
The timing of the cold front Friday as it sweeps towards the big cities from the Ohio Valley is everything as to how hot it gets Friday afternoon. Thursday right now appears to be the hottest day BUT the current ECMWF chart supports strongest heights and warmest 850 temps directly over the I-95 corridor. If the front, which could bring severe thunderstorms, held off till late afternoon or evening, we may actually see the hottest temperatures Friday from DC to Boston. We may potentially see all the major cities reach 100° if that was the case.
For those loathing this heat and humidity, the good news is that once this front pushes through the cities, we will see a dramatic change in temperatures. Yes, the heat will be gone as quick as it arrived. We may actually see weekend 70s return just 24 to 36 hours after 100° highs.
Next week will be darn cool with a refreshing northwest flow originating all the way up to Hudson Bay. Low humidity and daytime highs may only be in the 60s across New England including Boston and New York while it only reaches the low 70s for Philadelphia, Baltimore and DC with nights falling into the 50s with rural 40s.
