Over the next 3-5 days we will continue to see a rather blocked, congested weather pattern over North America with a trough over the Northwest and a large trough which extends from the Great Lakes all the way down to the Carolinas. A high over Hudson Bay will keep the cool flow going with highs again today likely to remain stuck in the low 50s in Boston, perhaps failing to hit 60 in NYC. The blocking high extending from Greenland to Hudson Bay is what’s creating resistence in the normal progressive west-east movement. This holds the eastern trough in place and with pressure added in the Pacific Northwest with a firehose of energy piledriving southeast from the GOA to Washington, this forces the ridge sandwiched inbetween to push north, squeezing heat all the way to NWT and Yukon over the next 2-4 days..
While we see one system spread rain and mtn snows across the NW just now, another, potentially stronger system currently over the Gulf of Alaska (see on map above) will be next to sweep southeast along a powerhouse jet stream and slam the British Columbia/Washington coast by Friday. This could bring further flooding to the Northwest along with major mountains snows above 6-8,000ft.
While we should see a brief rebound in heights over the Deserts ahead of the next trough, this next trough will allow 100s to build back in before shifting this heat east, northeast. 90s return to the Dakotas by this weekend as the energy piles into the Northeast.
As the low pushes into the NW towards the Rockies and Northern Plains, one must watch this weekend for severe weather from the Rockies eastwards as very cold air flows overtop of the heat and humidity. Sunday through Tuesday, maybe even Wednesday sees a possibly high severe weather threat from the Rockies out onto the Plains.
While the Northeast trough remains largely intact through this week, keeping temps from the Lakes to Carolinas 5-15F below normal for early June, we’re gonna see an eventual change with this next system. By Sunday and Monday of next week, expect height rises over the Lakes, Ohio Valley and east with a return of near 90 for Chicago, perhaps even reaching this in NYC by Tuesday.
