>BREAKING NEWS: 5PM Update: The snows have arrived after starting earlier this afternoon over Dumfries and Galloway. As the steady falling snow begins to whitten the ground, I expect this snow to continue through much of this evening and perhaps even into the early hours with perhaps periods of lightening up or even a brief shut off all together. Winds should freshen adding a windchill. How much will fall, perhaps 1-2 inches.
SNOW EXPECTED LATER TODAY, HOW MUCH WILL FALL?
Good afternoon. It sure was a chilly morning under a beautiful, clear blue sky. A very wintry look out there whilst driving into Glasgow as I noticed the left over patches of frozen snow from yesterday covered in a hard frost and driving into the urban heart of Glasgow, it was evident how cold it was with vigorous plumes of steam and vapors belching out of smoke stakes from industries, power stations and of course cars, trucks and buses. Morning number six below freezing in this current but waning streak of below freezing nights. Canals, lakes and even streams reformed ice on their surface.
Today clouds have moved in and has literally lidded the cold air in and this cold air of what I believe is perhaps more Arctic than Atlantic will set the base for a period of snow late this afternoon and into this evening perhaps slowing down the commute home.
Two reasons why I think this air is Arctic 1) clouds rolled in and there was no warming, frost still remains thick on the ground and temps aren’t rising. Skies cleared I believe north to south and I hold on the the fact that from the southern Highlands (just north of Loch Lomond) there has been Arctic air driven in on northeast winds off Scandinavia bringing almost constant snows whilst here in the central Belt and across the Southern Uplands we have been more under Atlantic air. Many days now have seen more of an Atlantic flow but whisps of Arctic air which is getting devided by the mountains is getting into our region and allowing more snow than rain despite us having a milder west wind.. That wind is being made cooler as Arctic air bleeds out of the Highlands.
Today may mark day 1 with a 32 degree or lower High and this mornings low was the coldest of the month so far and coldest in 27 days.
Unfortunately I don’t believe this mornings low 20s will be Februarys coldest. More snow will hit and I still hold on to the idea of a heavier more substantial snowfall later in the month and a cold blast which still could bring us another 3 or more nights under 20 degrees and another 2 or 3 days below freezing…
Winter isn’t done yet folks but what I will say is that winters days are becoming increasingly numbered as we head deeper into February.
Thanks for reading.
