>Winter now grabbing hold of the US as expected. Minneapolis may fall to -15 degrees tonight, Chicago near zero..
Tonight a low will trek north up the East Coast and produce an out and out Blizzard from northern New York State to Maine which will likely bring 6-20 inches of snow with the most expect across north-central Maine. Even down towards Boston and points west may see as much as 6 inches locally with around 2 inches widespread.
Lake Effect
Whilst the Blizzard will rage across New England, powerful NW winds will rip across the Great Lakes and this will ignite intense lake effect bands of snow to downwind areas of particularly west NY state and may bring as much as 2 feet or more of snow over the next 24 hour period.
Brutal Cold blowing into the N. Plains
An Arctic High is now dropping down into the Northern tier and will bring reinforcing cold into the Northern Plains and down into the Deep South as well as spread towards the Mid-Atlantic states.
Lows tonight may fall towards 15 below zero for Minneapolis and near zero for Chicago whilst northern Minnesota and North Dakota may see lows drop to 30 below in places like Grand Forks and International Falls. Wind chills will fall into the 35 to 45 below range as winds blow hard out of the NW.
Tomorrow, highs will fail to top zero in many locations across North Dakota, Minnesota and northern Wisconsin. Minneapolis may struggle to warm above 5 degrees and Chicago may fail to reach 15 to 18 degrees…
Cold set to stay…
With a pattern locking into place, it appears the push of more intense Arctic air into the mid-section of the United States will be a dominant pattern for much of, if not all of January and the core of coldest air will migrate eastwards with time. A strong negative AO and NAO suggests a warm pool will remain over Greenland and this will keep the troughiness centered over the Eastern US for the forseeable future.

>That's great news Mark. Are you coming to the Tiaga for a visit? Maybe we go shoot some bears? I hope the warm pool remains as nothing hacks me off more than having to demist my windows with cold air.
>you folks across Northern Canada have a warm pool setting up and thus shoving the cold pool south into southern Canada and the USA.. Please keep me posted as to what's going on up there. Email me so I can correspond with you.. Thanks..
>I agree, I live in Northern Canada, in the depths of the Tiaga. We've got little snow here. But the warm sunshine has kept my outdoor swimming pool ice free. Me and the bears have been taking a dip to cool off. It's just not cold out.
>Can't believe are luck so far this winter, I live at the west end of Lake Ontario in Hamilton. Guess winds have been in our favour but we have had no snow to speak of, just a couple of light dustings so far. I blame it on the fact that I bought snow tires for this winter! Sure we will get some sooner or later but glad to have had it easy so far this season.
