NEAR 1050MB SCANDINAVIAN BLOCK BRINGS PROLONGED SETTLED SPELL, SNOW IN EAST

Written by on October 3, 2016 in Autumn 2016, Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

The upper air pattern turns much more meridional or amplified this week as a Scandinavian blocking high builds and expands. The core of this huge high nears 1050mb this week. It’s affects are being felt throughout the UK and Ireland and as far east of Russia and Kazakhstan. This large boulder in the upper air stream reroutes the Atlantic storm track north and south but the biggest weather story this week will be the early season cold shot into Poland and central, southeast Europe.

Low pressure drifting WSW underneath the high will bring the first taste of snow to mountainous areas of southern Poland, Czech down into the Balkans along with freezing ENE winds.

Throughout Scandinavia, Low Countries, UK and much of Ireland, skies should be bright or sunny through much of this week with Atlantic fronts failing to reach Irish shores. Mild by day, cool with risk of frost and fog by night.

The below GFS surface anomaly shows the domination of this setup and lows ruling southern Europe. Little rain is expected from UK to Russia over the next 7, maybe 10 days.
