At this time of year it’s hard to keep snow on the ground and without it, it’s hard to stay cold by day, especially when the sun is shining.
The past two morning’s started off exceptionally cold for April and the past two days have been incredible with highs only managing the 20s and 30s.
This air mass is exceptional for this late. Tough to hold snow cover and hold cold through the day, we’re getting both.
Part of the reason why this air mass is not moderating much. Canada remains snow covered east of the Rockies.

2pm temps yesterday with snow cover clearly refrigerating the air despite cloudless sky. Pretty amazing as this shows power of air mass fighting against strong April sunshine…

With the presence of a large low spinning over the Great Lakes, temps are recovering even in the Northeast but check out the widespread snow falling across southern Ontario.

GFS 2m temps at 18z Thu.

The current system crossing the Lakes/Ohio Valley now looks to be a substantial rainmaker for the Northeast but as you can see a clipper follows, potentially bringing another accumulating 3-6″ swath of snow from Ohio to southern New England followed by an even colder air mass than seen already.
