EASTERN US: May Warmth To Be Followed By February Cold That May Hold For A While…

Models are often far apart in their solutions, especially the further out you go. However, both EPS Control and GFS ensemble remain adamant on a textbook Greenland blocking pattern developing and entering a mature state within 6-10 days. This supports a more persistent or stubborn trough connecting the north shore of Hudson Bay to Florida.

Hope you’ve enjoyed the warmth in recent days.

Highs yesterday.

Cold front wiping out the spring warmth and ushering in February cold will be accompanied by gusty winds this weekend.

Back to the medium to longer term and the strong positive linking British Columbia with the North Atlantic over top tells me that a cooler than normal pattern is likely to linger longer than expected.

We’ve major cold coming south during the second half of this weekend but it’s not the only shot, we’ve a further 2 waves coming southeast over the Great Lakes into the Northeast, possibly Southeast later next week. These longer range solutions suggest more may follow taking us into the mid part of April.

Note the cooler than normal covers a large part of the nation from Rockies to Atlantic and this holds firm till at least the 16th.
