It’s classic March! The weekend just gone was a chilly one with snow showers, supressed daytime temps and icy NNE breeze coupled with cold, frosty nights.

By this upcoming weekend, expect it to be near opposite with a taste of spring on the way.

The ridge intensifies further into early next week and this could deliver teens all the way into Scotland. Less warm across the Med though! However, we’re watching the position of that high carefully as Siberian air begins to enter eastern Europe as a result.

Check out the big thermal flip between this morning where it dipped to -9C in the Highlands to next Wednesday afternoon when it could hit +15C!

Here’s a break down on this upcoming week’s weather according to the GFS surface.
This morning was another clear and cold start with high pressure over the UK but further south it was cold as well as snowy across the heart of Spain.
We saw -9C in the Highlands last night but it dropped to -10.6C over the mountains of north-central Spain and there was plenty of snow to wake up too also.

High pressure gives way to Atlantic low pressure later today into tomorrow, marking a big change in our weather pattern.
Frost quickly develops over Scotland after sunset but through the overnight, transient rain, sleet and snow pushes through.

In comes a more noticeable system across southern Ireland and the UK during Wednesday but it remains cool. The lift in temperature arrives in the wake of this system.

By Saturday morning, it’s looking good. Looks like this strong ridge building in from the Azores in response to a deep Atlantic low tracking NNE into southern Greenland, will deliver classic large diurnal fluctuation typical of March. Cool, frosty nights but mild to borderline warm afternoons!

Is that winter over? No I don’t believe it is as the SSE is likely to present more Greenland/Iceland blocking through the 2nd half of this month.
Wow! If only it we’re early January right? I can see a cold end to March and start to April on the way!
