NORTHEAST US: Extreme Cold Pulls Back But Likely Returns Feb 23-29 With New Strat Warm

Written by on February 16, 2016 in United States of America, Winter 2015/16 with 0 Comments

After a warm opening 12 days to February in the Northeast, the arctic blast from the past weekend has actually flipped the anomaly below normal and given what’s ahead with further snow systems and cold, this month is likely to go down as below normal.

This month sure is impressive for the Mid-Atlantic.

The current system advancing due north up the Appalachians is bringing two weather types in a matter of 24-36 hours. Yesterday it was a 1-3 inch snowstorm for the Mid-Atlantic and coating to 2 inches up through Philly and NYC yesterday is now driving temps well into the 50s as far north as Boston while there’s a legitimate snowstorm west of the mountains.

In the wake of this system, another cold pool drops in with temps falling back into the upper teens, low 20s for the Big Cities while it turns bone chilling over the fresh snow cover to the west of the mountains.

The temp rollercoaster continues as we see a strong Plains high expand through the Ohio Valley into the Northeast to end the week and begin the weekend.

This is then followed by more cold late weekend into next week.

However, as we head towards Feb 23-29th, there is strong hints of another major Northeast snowstorm followed by arctic cold and you only have to look to the 50mb level over the arctic to see why this is plausible.

The polar vortex has regrouped in recent days hence a trend with warmer air involved but another major push of warmth from Asia over the pole and down North America suggests plenty more winter to come.
