Iberia, France Turn Stormy While Arctic Door Opens To UK

The pattern across Ireland and the British Isles has relaxed substantially following the recent bombardment of storms. Higher pressure and colder air filtering south will make it at least feel a bit more February-like while the storms get re-routed into France, Spain and Portugal.

Little weather to speak of today through early Friday with a few showers interrupting the crisp February sunshine but storm-force wind, heavy rain, mountain snow and big battering waves will make for a poor weekend throughout Iberia and France.

It’s the secondary low sliding underneath the block of cold we’re watching closely as models still take this feature through the Channel. The worst of it’s weather actually stays in France but moisture being wrapped into the north side bears close watching as colder air in place over the UK may see some snow but admittedly that threat is looking less than 24 hours ago.

Winds blow hard off the Atlantic on the system’s southern flank but shiver Scotland from the east on the northern flank.

It remains cool through the rest of this work week and turns decidedly colder with the return of arctic air Friday-Saturday. The channel low which bring nasty wind, rain and wave action to coastal France, Spain and Portugal but winds blow in from the east across Scotland and here we may see snow showers and accumulation.

As we progress into Sun-Mon, high pressure builds and positions itself between Iceland and Scotland while the channel low pushes into Germany, this draws Scandinavian air southwest into the UK making for a bitterly cold feel with potential for minus double digits nights once again.

As you can see, snow cover does deepen and expand over Northern Britain but not so much further south.
