While one autumnal low departs, packing damaging wind gusts along the Dutch coast and generating 12-22ft swells at sea, another is sweeping into Ireland and after a day of sun and heavy, thundery showers, expect cloud, wind and rain to increase through Saturday night over the UK.
It appears this low was a record-breaker for the Netherlands. Worst for the month of July since 1901 with quite a lot of damage along the coast.

These unusual lows by mid-summer standards are riding right along the extremely sharp gradient between abnormally cold to the south of Greenland and abnormally warm west of Portugal. It’s pretty amazing when looking at land temperatures and how they reflect the SST profile. It’s like autumn across much of Ireland, Scotland and Northern England as well as Denmark up into Scandinavia while it’s roasting across central and southern Europe where water temperatures surrounding Italy resemble the Caribbean or Persian Gulf, not Mediterranean.

SST’s up to 32C around Italy!

So, how might this effect autumn and more importantly for many of us, winter? I’m working on that…
Visible satellite imagery from this morning shows that powerful low which brought 3 inches of rain (a month’s worth) and 50 mph winds to Southeast England.

However, the most impressive effects from this storm was felt in coastal parts of the Netherlands. Many trees have been brought down by 60-70 mph winds.
Check out these amazing images from Katwijk aan Zee, located along the Dutch North Sea coast.

Tough conditions for landing. Strange to think this is July as well.
A non-thunderstorm wind gust of 98 mph was recorded over Germany today. This is pretty much unheard in July here.

I would imagine you would have to go back many a year to see the last time a damaging JULY wind storm has impacted mainland Europe. This comes after all-time record heat to open the month. This summer in a sense has just gotten weirder.
Just look at the temperature contrast between north and south yesterday. Mid teens even for Southern England? That’s CHILLY for late July! Many reports of 12-13C HIGHS within the cloud, wind and rain, that’s about 10C off average for late July…

Yesterday’s anomaly

So, one major low exits and another arrives. Look for a cool, wet and windy day across a broad area of the UK during Sunday and this low looks to stick around as we commence the new working week. After this thing moves east we’re watching another possible southern track low which the models take through the English Channel and impacts areas getting slammed now. For much of next week, we find ourselves in a cool, northerly flow which will keep temps 4-8C below normal UK-wide and shall continue to drive in a colder-than-normal July for the majority of the UK.
