El Nino Fuels Record Start To E Pacific Hurricane Season, Significantly Influences US Pattern

The abnormally warm eastern Pacific waters, while driving a warm West and cold East winter the past 2 years, it’s now responsible for getting the 2015 East Pacific Hurricane Season off to a record start by spawning two major hurricanes already. It’s also been responsible for the mega Southern Plains drought buster and brought a weirdly cool, wet May to the Desert Southwest.

The hurricane activity in the Pacific is also influence weather over the Western United States by sending unusual cold pools in. June is typically a dry month and more so than July and August where the monsoon has more influence.

Check out the current global SSTA’s. Just look at how warm waters are up and down the West Coast of both North  and South America.

Both Andres and Blanca are having influence on the US pattern with moisture from both systems being caught and pulled in. Andres, while dying far out to sea and Blanca a fully fledged, powerful Hurricane, BOTH systems will and are driving moisture into the Southwest and Rockies, enhancing the shower and thunderstorm risk. Blanca is expected to make a Baja landfall this weekend.

Here’s the latest satellite image of Blanca as it heads north towards the Baja of California.

The system is expected to weaken on approach to the Baja as waters are cooler.

While May was an unusually cool and wet month over the Desert Southwest and Southern California, June is looking to follow suit as another unusually strong upper low crosses the region, it’s this upper low that’s tapped moisture from Andres.

These features are unusual in May, even more so in June and in the rare years it does happen, it’s almost always down to very warm water extending down the West Coast.

It’s a beautiful evening in Cabo San Lucas but vacationers should make the most of it as Blanca is soon to spoil.

The presence of the upper trough over the SW has boosted heights and surface temps over soggy Texas and Oklahoma to the warmest values of the year.

Dallas finally made it to their first 90 yesterday. That made for the city’s 4 latest 90 on record.

Here’s the 7-day mean 500mb height anomaly off the GFS.

As for next week, the upper low over CA next few days will eventually push east, reducing heights and bringing back rain chances to the Southern Plains. That in turn will lead to cooler weather once again. The transient theme is here to stay.
