The never ending extreme US pattern persists with a burst of heat this week following all-time record cold last week.
Yesterday’s highs (below). The only reason why the 100s are impressive up over South Dakota is because of the wild flip from record cold last week. ‘Normal’ summer heat is practically non-existent on the Plains this summer and dew points soaring into the 70s with highs reaching the 90s sure will be a shock to0 the system.

It’s a tropical-like morning over the Mid-Mississippi Valley with lows bottoming out in the 70s, even 80s and factor in mid to upper 70 degree dew points and it’s the FIRST OPPRESSIVE morning.

Expect more 100s on the Plains today but the hot dome gets squashed into the South later this week, what a surprise eh?

Here’s the current 500mb anomaly chart across the US. Note the negative off the PNW coast, that’s the next big eastern trough! The north, northeast poke of the ridge sends a renewed negative down the East Coast.
