July Cold Outbreak Just As Impressive As January… 32 Below Normal In Oklahoma!

Written by on July 18, 2014 in United States of America with 0 Comments

While it’s obvious the chill back in mid-winter was more impressive than the chill we’re currently seeing. However, let’s not overlook what’s going on. In terms of the meteorology and time of the year, the chill now is just as impressive ‘meteorologically’ as it was in January when comparing the ‘averages’ and historic value. Widespread RECORD cold highs and lows being set at the hottest time of the year. 30 below normal in July is tougher to get than 30 below normal in January!

There have been countless new records set from Minnesota to the Gulf Coast. Just how cold and how significant has it been?

Here were the ‘highs’ yesterday.

Many records which have fallen go back to the late 1880s!

Back on Monday, Minneapolis only ‘warmed’ to 65, breaking a daily record which dated back to 1884.

On Tuesday, following an unusually chilly start, most Midwest and Plains cities only rose into the 60s. Up In Marquette, MI where ice lined the shoreline into June, the high Tuesday only topped 53 degrees. That not only broke the previous record by 11 degrees but was the average high for October 15.

Yesterday was no warmer. In fact the chill deepened in the Southern Plains with a high of just 69 degrees at Ponca City, OK. This is in fact the coldest July day in here 47 years!

The high of 72 in Oklahoma City was the coldest for July since 1996, before then, you have to go all the way back to 1967!

Here are some record lows yesterday AM.

The current cold and unusually deep trough dove into the US in perfect response to the recurve of super typhoon neoguri. We’re currently watch typhoon rammasun head due west into China and this is teleconnecting nicely with an eastern ridge. However models show a new typhoon and possible recurve within the next 10 days and funnily enough, models have an eastern trough back over the US towards the end of the month.
