WILD PATTERN: 2 January Level Arctic Shots, 2 Snowstorms For US Next 7 Days!

Written by on November 22, 2013 in United States of America with 0 Comments

Unfortunately I am strapped for time this evening so I’m going to need to cut this post short this evening. Boy, do we not have some wild weather coming now over the next 10+ days as not one but TWO January level arctic blast come straight out of Alaska with fuel stemming all the way from the frigid snow fields of Siberia.

Here was the numbers this morning. Yep, it hit 20 below over eastern Montana this morning while all the way up in Northwest Territories, it reached another low below -50!

The pattern holds through at least the next 10 days with the ridge pushing mild up into NW North America while in turns will keep the arctic air driving into the Plains, Midwest and East.

Here’s a quick and dirty look at the GFS pressure chart through the rest of the week and weekend.

Temperatures will dive into the mid-teens all the way to the Texas Panhandle and struggle to recover to the mid-20sĀ during tomorrow. Heavy snows over the CO Rockies spread north then northeast as the arctic air spreads east. The entire core of the arctic high will be centredĀ over Chicago Sunday which should mark day 2 in a row of mid to LOW 20s. That according to Tom Skilling would be a first in 13 years this early in the season.

By Monday, the DC to Boston corridor will be struggling in the upper 20s mid afternoon with lows by night in the teens.

As for next week, well we must watch a SECOND blast of truly bitter cold while a coastal system tries to form. Major snowstorm on the East Coast right around Thanksgiving? Not out of the question. COLD? well there’s no question about that!

GFS is out to see with next week’s storm but the ECMWF is difference. Need to watch the combo of the developing low as it lifts north up the eastern US while the next shot of arctic air comes down while warm waters off the coast may feedback to develop a strong coastal low.
