Scotland

What a difference a day makes. Following yesterday’s glorious summer sunshine and temperatures to go with it, today has been very different with rain spreading northwards through the day. Winds too have been picking up from a southerly direction. The best of today’s sunshine has been confined to the North where highs here have been the warmest in all of the UK. Through tonight and the rain band spreads into the Far North while from the southern Highlands on south clears with lows dipping no lower than 5-6C even in rural areas thanks to a fresh southerly wind. Through your Thursday and it’s wettest and windiest across Dumfries and Galloway as well as the western Borders, drier and somewhat less windy from the Central Lowlands northwards but here too should be blustery, just won’t be the gales we get along the Solway coast where gusts may touch 60 mph with 40-50 mph gusts over inland parts of the South. Highs tomorrow range from generally 11-13, locally 14C.[s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level1)]

England

After a stunning day for many across England yesterday with temperatures soaring to 24C in Merseyside, today it’s closer to 14 or 15C with an increasing SW wind through tonight with heavy rain spreading into western parts. Eastern and Southeastern parts won’t fair too badly tonight with clearer skies and lighter winds but by dawn Thursday, winds will be picking up everywhere and a shield of heavy and persistent rain will be spread across the Midlands, North and eventually into all parts from Birmingham northwards. The Southeast, while very windy with coastal gusts (near Dover) of 60-65 mph, nearer 40-45mph around Greater London, it’s a day of sunshine and blustery showers,

Highs range from a cool 11 to possibly 14 or 15C where the sunshine breaks through.

Wales

Hope you enjoyed the warm sunshine yesterday because today is a very different story with outbreaks of rain and a freshing SW wind which through tonight and tomorrow will really whip up.

Expect gales right across the country during Thursday with gusts along exposed coasts of up to 70 mph, inland gusts may well reach 50 mph. Heavy pulses of rain will get swept across the country along with the SW gales, so not a great day to be out and about tomorrow and watch out for some downed tree branches.

Lows tonight dip no lower than 5C and tomorrow, with all the wind and rain it will feel cool with highs reaching no higher than 12-14C.

Northern Ireland

It’s been a rather unsettled day across NI with blustery showers dominating but get into some sunshine and out of the wind and you may enjoy 15-16, locally 17C. Through tonight and the front clears, allowing for some lighter winds and clearer skies to develop through the first half of the night but by dawn Thursday, winds pick up again from the SSE, touching gale-force along the Down coast where gusts may push 60-65 mph, inland parts by see gusts to 50 mph which could bring down some loose trees branches. Heavy pulses of rain will accompany the strong winds and these winds will always be strongest in the South, particularly Down and Armagh.

Highs tomorrow will be a fresher 11-13C.

Ireland

It’s been a wet and windy Wednesday throughout Ireland and tonight will see another swath of rain sweep in from the Atlantic as the next frontal system moves in. Winds will increase with storm-force gusts expected along the Atlantic coast but right across the country, gales are likely with gusts exceeding 50 mph. While local power outages are possible along with some downed small trees, flooding is also of concern as the heavy pulses of rain sweep in frequently. Lows tonight will go no lower than 6-8C.

Thursday is looking largely wet with continued gales for most areas. As the deep low gradually moves east, so conditions should improve through tomorrow evening. Highs tomorrow will range from 11-14C.
