It’s been a fairly decent mid-December day across Scotland with an odd mist or fog patch the exception which likely kept your temperature nearer freezing today. A mix of sun and cloud dominated with just an odd shower idown the east coast.

Tonight will turn cool with rural lows near to 2-3C early but through the night, while it’s a dry and quiet night, a southeast breeze will pick up and so too will clouds thicken from the southwest. Lows generally 3-6C.

The weather repeats itself through Wednesday from the overnight with cloud, a southeast breeze and a largely dry day, however as we progress into the Wednesday evening, so rains eventually spread in from the North Channel, this will make for a wet overnight Wed into Thurs with heavy rain and strong southeast winds lingering for much of the country through the day. Watch for potential flooding in the east and significant snowfall over Grampian.

England

It’s been a largely fine, dry and settled day with decent spells of sunshine in places and this should make way for a pleasant night to come. However, through the overnight period, heavy rain and a strengthening southeast wind will push into Devon and Cornwall all thanks to yet another frontal system spreading, attached to a deep low out over the Atlantic. This arm of moitsure and strong winds will slowly creep northeast through tomorrow which will make for a wet and windy Wednesday for areas to the west of the Pennines while to the east, it’s a dry, bright day up until Wednesday night. Lows tonight may dip to near freezing over the rural Midlands and over eastern England ahead of cloud, wind and rain.

So, by tomorrow evening, while we see drying out in the southwest and eventually western parts, the wet and windy weather will reach the east. late tomorrow into Thursday morning. Lows range from 2-6C tonight, highs 5-10C tomorrow.

Wales

After a fine, dry and bright December day across the country, unfortunately it’s all chance come tonight as the next system sweeps a band of rain and strong winds in overnight tonight. Expect an early dip to near freezing early but after midnight, watch as winds increase along the south coast and these will spread northeast along with cloud and eventual rain. Lows tonight 2-5C.

Tomorrow will be a wet and windy day with gales along the south coast.

Tomorrow evening will see rains eventually dimish in the southwest but there is a chance of seeing a further pulse of heavy rain try to work in later tomorrow evening. Highs tomorrow 6-9C.

Northern Ireland

A dry day will make way for a mainly dry night but it’s all change come the second half of tonight as a band of heavy rain accompanied by strong southeast winds advances from the west and spreads right across the country by dawn tomorrow, Expect gales along the east coast.

Wednesday will be a wet and windy day with highs between 5-8C, We should see clearing into Wednesday evening but the unsettled theme continues with more rain on the way for Thursday.

Ireland

It’s been a dry and pleasant day across Ireland and for much of tonight, central, northern and eastern parts will stay dry although winds will pick up. By late tonight, rain will spread into southern parts with heavy pulses. This rain band will eventually reach all parts by dawn or mid morning Wednesday. expect a blustery, wet day everywhere with gales along south and east coasts, highs 6-9C.
