Scotland
A VERY WET PERIOD WILL DOMINATE THE NEXT 48 HOURS, PARTICULARLY IN THE WEST, WATCH FOR POOR TRAVEL CONDITIONS AND FLOODING!
It’s been a very damp, overcast and dreary day across much of the country, particularly in western areas, always drier in the east but here there is more mist and fog to contend with. A slow warming trend began today thanks to that moist and milder southwest flow following a cold start this morning, temperatures which started either a few degrees above freezing or well below, only gradually warmed through this afternoon. As the flow continues from a southwest direction throughout the next 48 hours, the warmer air will make inroads but at the cost of heavy low cloud, persistent rain or drizzle and a stiff SW wind.
Tonight will remain wet, breezy but mild with lows in the west dipping no lower than 8 or 9C, in the drier east, closer to 5-6C. Rain will be steady and at times heavy through tonight throughout the west from the Northwest Highlands extending south through Lochaber, Argyll, Glasgow, Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway.
Tomorrow will be milder, wet and blustery. Highs tomorrow will be a good 2-5C above normal for the time of year with most areas reaching at least 12 or 13, perhaps an odd 14 or even 15C. The flow is from a subtropical source and packed with moisture, so this contains more warmth!
Tuesday into Wednesday will remain much the same as the frontal boundary in which this stream of moisture is running along, remains very slow moving.
With this setup, be aware of surface flooding as rainfall totals will mount up.
England
After a damp old day across a large part of England, tonight will see the rain and heavy low cloud linger through the night in the North, while elsewhere there will be a mix of cloud, mist and fog. A murky sort of night will be evident thanks to a southwest wind keeping the air rather mild for this time of year. Lows will struggle to get below 10C across much of the south, even central and northern areas will hold at 7-9C.
Tomorrow willbe generally dry with the exception of some steady drizzle beneath the low, misty cloud over Cumbria, perhaps extending south into coastal Lancashire. Western areas will always be that but cloudier while the further east you go the better chance of seeing some bright or sunny spells. The southwest breeze will be noticeable along the west coast, lighter further inland but for all, it will be mild at 12-13C.
Tuesday night into Wednesday will be a near repeat with always the greatest chance of precip in the far north, cloudiest in the west, brightest in the east with overnight lows ranging from 8-12C, highs 12-13C.
Wales
Like for northwest England and western Scotland, much of Wales is dominated by low cloud, persistent rain or drizzle, a southwest breeze and mild temperatures. Tonight will be much the same with the steady stream of moisture continuing to pour up from the Celtic Sea overnight. With the milder air comes mist and murkiness. Watch for local flooding also as some of this rain could be locally heavy and persistent. The mild, damp flow will keep temperatures up at 8-10C overnight.
Through tomorrow it’s a wet, mild and damp day with a lot of low cloud and mist, perhaps drier in southern areas with a chance of some sun breaking through during the afternoon. Highs will rise minimally from the overnight low, but it’s mild at 12-14C with a stiff SW wind along the coast, breezy inland.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland finds itself, like western Scotland beneath the nearly stalled frontal system which has copious amounts of moisture streaming along it. The flow from a SW direction is a mild one so with the persistent and at times, heavy rain throughout the rest of tonight and even into tomorrow, comes mild temperatures. Lows tonight drop no lower than 8-11C and tomorrow they climb to 12-14C.
Tomorrow night and through Wednesday remains mild, damp and dreary.
Ireland
Wet, windy and mild is the weather theme throughout Ireland tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday as a frontal boundary draws up copious amounts of moisture from the heart of the subtropical Atlantic. A strong southwest wind will keep the supply of cloud, rain and also mild air with lows tonight falling no lower than 8-12C. Winds along the west coast could touch gale-force.
Tomorrow will continue to see heavy, low cloud and persistent rain which some breaks and easing for eastern areas but it will be particularly wet for western and northern areas through tomorrow night and even into Wednesday. Daytime highs will be a very mild 12-14C.
