Nature’s wrath: Gale force winds create spectacular scenes along North Sea coasts as waves crash against Seaham Harbour lighthouse in County Durham (Courtesy of Daily Mail)
Since early Sunday, wind and rain has been battering Southern areas of Britain and today the strengthening winds and torrential rains have been slowly spreading north with the low which continues to deepen with a web of tightly wound isobars covering the British Isles.
While rains ease in the South through tonight, winds will increase out of the northwest as the centre pushes towards Northern England. Rains beneath the low are torrential, persistent and causing headaches for travellers. Flooding is and will result and to make matters worse, the winds are quickly increasing to gale force widely. It will be a terrible night to be out and about and one to be tucked away in a warm house as a fully fledged gale will be whipping most areas through tonight and into tomorrow morning across the UK and Ireland too.
Torrential (Flooding) Rains To Lash Northern England, Southern Scotland & Northern Ireland For The Next 24-36 Hours!
Tonight and all day tomorrow will see the worst conditions just north of Manchester up through Carlisle and into southern and eastern Scotland with rains becoming very heavy and relentless through tonight which will last through much of Tuesday. 2-4 inches is likely across a broad area.
Winds will continue increasing across this region with strongest winds on the northern edge of this intense, near stalled rain canopy. Expect 20-30 mph sustained winds across inland areas including the Central Belt with gusts of 55-65 mph. Hurricane-force (75 mph) wind gusts could impact the Northeast England, east coast of Scotland tonight into morning with exposed east coast areas possibly experiencing gusts to 80 mph. Over the Highlands and gusts beyond 100 mph is likely with some perhaps topping 110 mph.
