The past 7 days was unsettled but with low pressure far enough to the west and strong high pressure over the near continent, a southwest flow made it feel warm to very warm and humid in all areas. This weekend was particularly warm and sultry across the South and East of England where temperatures topped the highest values of the year so far in the UK.

The big old low which has been with us for the best part of a week now will send some weak fronts across the UK through Monday, turning the flow more out of the W, NW compared to S, SW and so the heat and humidity is kicked out.

Recent nights have been warm, sultry with some not getting below 70F

The warmth and humidity didn’t just make days feel warm but nights too, especially where skies where part to mostly cloudy and there was a lot of dampness following daytime highs near 22C (72F). This damp, humid air flowing up from the subtropics stop the temperature from falling at night been and in fact the past couple of mornings saw lows in parts of the South of England holding at around (70F) 21C. At 3am Saturday morning, the temperature was still 75F (23C) at Langdon Bay and 72F (22C) at Shoeburyness. Even up across central and southern Scotland temperatures held at between 60-66F (16-19C) for lows and it was even near 20C during the night before cooling slighty more at dawn. My low yesterday morning of 61F was in fact the warmest night low since moving to this home 3 years ago. The previous warmest low was 60F (16C).

Step down in temps across South this week but feeling a lot fresher in the North with sun & showers

The upcoming week holds onto the unsettled theme but there’s a cool, fresher air mass coming in from the W, NW. That low is continuing to meander around the Northeast Atlantic but the trough is now lowering heights throughout the UK which will bring highs back down to between 16-18C over Scotland and for the next few days in the South expect more sunshine but a fresher 22-25C and from Wednesday on into late next week, highs fall towards 21C for London.

Following on-off showers blowing in from the Atlantic, affecting mainly central and northern areas, high pressure lingers in the South with a breakdown late in the week but till then it should be a fairly warm and pleasant through Wednesday.

Next storm system arrives next weekend?

It looks like the end of this week and into the weekend will see the return of more organised and widespread rain along with windier conditions too as a new low pushes across Ireland Thursday and into the UK by Friday.
