Following the coldest July average minimum temperature in 30 years for Australia as a whole, the month of August has continued the cold trend thanks to the persistent high keeping skies clear at night which allows daytime warmth to quickly escape back to space at night.
The cold in recent nights has advanced further north over the eastern side of the country with southern Queensland joining in on those bitter nights. According to The Weather Channel, the community of Thangool endured their coldest August night in 9 years with a low of -3C yesterday morning while Blackall even more impressively saw their coldest night (in any month) in 9 years with a low of -2C.
It was even colder at both Roma and Oakey with lows for both dipping to -4C, said to be some 8-9C below normal and coldest nights for August in 7 years.
