There’s no disputing, it’s yet another scorcher of a day across the Northeast with widespread mid and upper 90s with the classic urban heat islands currently over 100°. This is certainly turning out to be a hot July and third consecutive for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The third summer where temperatures have reached 100° in Philadelphia and a third where it’s hit 100° multiple times in Washington DC is impressive.
However, should we get carried away by all this crazy heat? Well no not really because, while there is a widespread area of 5-9C above normal stretched from Illinois to Massachusetts, it’s rather cool over the Southeast, Florida, Texas and most of all, California where it’s equally as cool as the Northeast is warm today. Summer of 2012 has been cool overall from the Continental Divide westwards to the Pacific Ocean.
As Joe Bastardi of WeatherBELL clearly states, our current climatic pattern is very reminicent of the 1950s, a turbulent era of change which, like now, is bringing wild weather. Only have to look at the cold PDO (Pacific Decadal Oscillation) and warm AMO (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation) with fluctuations in the ENSO, PNA NAO to add to the volatile mix.

Today’s GFS deviation from normal map shows large area of 5-9C above normal over Northeast but equally there’s a large area of 5-9C below normal over large area of California. (Map courtesy of Dr Ryan E. Maue/Policlimate.com)
