It really was a day for getting outside, no snow, no ice and no wind chill, only brilliant sunshine. You could have even wore a t-shirt, well certainly compared to a cold 19-degree high only 10 days ago. The mild, Atlantic pattern remains.

RAIN: Heavy rain overnight
An overnight which saw heavy rain and mild air with temps holding in the 40s but as rain and clouds moved out before sunrise, temps fell into the upper 30s by mid-morning. Skies remained mostly clear and winds light and with a slightly higher mid-January sun warming the ground, we enjoyed an almost balmy feeling 47 degrees just after lunchtime, a new high for a month running 8-10 degrees below normal. Dry air and clear skies saw a steady drop off to 45 just an hour after hitting the high and even a return to the 30s was found before sunset. Now as of 10pm we have hit freezing under clear, starry skies and a light wind regime. This pocket of clear, calm skies allows nice mild days but cool nights when the air is reasonably dry and there are no cloud and wind. There’s nothing to hold in heat accommulated throughout the day.
