Todays Extremes here at the house
High 25 degrees (1.49pm) Low 15 degrees (8.27am)
RAIN/SNOW: None
Snowcover 1-2″
An overnight which brought clear skies which allowed strong radiational cooling to drive heat at the surface back to space with such expansive snowcover. Fresh, deep snow across England along with the very clear skies aided in bringing the coldest readings of winter so far to north-central and south-central portions of England with a reading of 0 degrees (-18C) reported at Woodford within Greater Manchester and Benson, Oxfordshire. Manchester hit a cold 9 degrees (-13C). Eskdalemuir, Dumfries and Galloway hit -15C and car thermometers read -13C at Sanquhar. In the higher, remote location of Crawfordjohn, only 7-8 miles northeast of Sanquhar a women reported her car reading a frigid -19C. Skies were clearer across Dumfries and Galloway and there was no brief cloudy period down there like there was up her when I left Glasgow around 3am. This brought a brief moderation in temperature across the Greater Glasgow area. The Southern Uplands also have deeper snowcover as well as higher terrain and sheltered valleys and basins which collect cold air better. I also noticed en-route to Dumfries significant snow drifts along the M74 between Happendon and Abington services of 2-6 feet, of course gale-force winds were blowing earlier, allowing major drifting to occur, especially over higher, more exposed ground. The high of 25 degrees is the second lowest maximum, second to Christmas Eve’s 24 degree high. Tomorrow’s high may rival the Christmas Eve “cold high” or beat it, depending on conditions during the day as well as just how cold the overnight gets.
