A strong ridge has built across much of the North American eastern flank and is pumping blazing heat and tropical humidity from Miami to Montreal with record or near record warm days and nights… Yesterday saw the late August sun and a favorable clockwise high pressure wind flow wafting up the eastern face of the Appalachains and the eastern Canada Laurentians that pumped 90s all the way from Miami to Montreal with dew points almost as high in Canada as the Deep South. Some impressive highs were set yesterday, but non AC residents would have been feeling the heat, especially at night.

This afternoon, Boston, Massachusetts reached a record tying 95 degrees… stark contrast to July when you couldn’t buy a 90.

It stayed in the 70s throughout the night from Caribou, Maine to Montreal to Toronto and throughout the Northeast, though in saying that the low in most places remained over 70, so 80s was likely still felt into the late night hours. The low this morning at LaGuardia Airport in Queens, just east of New York city only fell to 80 (this site regularly experiences the warmest temps for this region). The very warm nights are thanks to high dew point air and the heat build up throughout the day. It only dropped to 74 in Burlington, Vermont after topping the 90-degree mark yesterday for the first time since June 10, 2008.

The realfeels were soaring into the upper 90s deep into the heart of New England and southern Quebec to make matters worse.

Relief Approaches!

A large cool pool that is within a trough over the center of the continent is moving east and in coming days will remove all the heat and humdity and bring cooler, drier air and this same trough is likely to keep Hurricane Bill off the East Coast of the US but may steer it into the Canadian Maritimes and Newfoundland by the end of this weekend.

Thanks for reading.
