Sgor Gaoith, southern Cairngorms

Exactly a week after my 23 mile, 3-munro marathon. I’m back at the Achlean car park in Glen Feshie to finish off the group on the southern edge of the Cairngorm massif.

Day/date: Sunday 17 June, 2018

Drive: 2 hours 20 mins

Weather: Fair 20C at bottom, light breeze, cloudy 7C on summit

Start point: Achlean, Glen Feshie

Munros: Sgor Gaoith

Walk length: 7 miles

The previous Sunday I completed Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair, Monadh Mor, Beinn Bhrotain, this Sunday I’m back to finish off with 3,667 ft Sgor Gaoith. Smooth on it’s western side and steep and jagged on it’s east, Sgor Gaoith lies seemingly within a stones throw west from mighty Braeriach. Separated only by beautiful Loch Eanaich.

Thankfully this walk was a mere fraction of that of last weekend’s and it was, on the face of it, a fairly easy walk with the exception of the steady climb from Achlean through the trees and up through the heather slopes to the 3,450 ft munro top of Carn Ban Mor. From here’s it’s fairly straight forward and easy with just a gentle incline spread over about a mile.

I finally reach the ridge line at just over 1000 metres or 3,280 ft  and now a more gentle final 200 ft towards Carn Ban Mor. Once on the ridge you don’t go back below ‘munro level’.

Summit of Sgor Gaoith nicely in view once the mist clears.

Nearing the top and the views are spectacular. First glimpse of Loch Eanaich.

Looking back at where I just came from.

Pointy summit of 3,667 ft Sgor Gaoith.

The summit! First munro I’ve been on without a cairn or anything.

Looking across Loch Eanaich and patiently waiting on the clouds lifting off Braeriach.

Looking north towards Glenmore National Forest.

Clouds only just obscuring the top of Cairngorm Mountain.

Cairngorm finally appears.

Looking across to my walking territory of last weekend. Monadh Mor in the distance!
