It’s been another snowy night/morning across much of Scotland including the Central Belt thanks to hefty snow showers blowing in on a cold WNW wind.

Lengthy clear spells in between the showers mean icy conditions and a freeze of the snow on the ground with dawn temps at or below freezing.
Feeling bitter in exposure to the breeze.

Due to a -AO but +NAO, our frequent spells of snow and cold (including now) have all come from Atlantic winds blowing off a cold Greenland and Iceland extending all the way back to Arctic Canada at times. Atlantic winds are relatively mild and often don’t bring much in the way of snow but the -AO has allowed lows riding the jet stream to entrain colder air than normal.

850mb temps have at times been very cold while crossing the Atlantic this winter leading to heavy snowfall for the UK.

Thankfully the -15 to -25C air at 5,000ft never makes it to UK shores, it looses some of it’s cold on approach.

It’s been a challenging winter for the Scottish mountain rescue teams.

So, while we woke up to more snow this morning, the next system moves in later this evening and overnight promising a more significant snowfall likely leading to travel headaches tomorrow morning.

It’s not just Scotland but Northern Ireland as well as England and Wales under the gun for disruptive snow tomorrow morning.

Looks like a cold start to Wednesday, if clear and little wind over a significant snowpack, we could shoot for -10 to -12C over the east Highlands once again ahead of building cloud, wind and eventually rain, sleet and snow with the next system.

The Wednesday system will have slightly milder air so more rain than snow at low levels.
