It’s been late coming but wintry weather finally arrived during October’s final week. An October which falls within the top 10 warmest October’s for the UK.

Cold northerly winds first brought the snow and ice Sunday to the Cairngorm plateau followed by high pressure Sunday night into Monday which brought the first widespread frost of the autumn.
Earlier in the month, all snow patches melted across Scotland for the first time in 11 years. The past weekend’s snow was too little too late.

Before bending around to the north and drawing down arctic air, the westerlies whipped over the tops of the Cairngorms with gusts of 114 mph Saturday blowing one hill walker off his feet, forcing search and rescue to go out.

Saturday’s incident illustrates the dangers of walking in high exposure during stormy conditions. As the article above states, the man, part of a well prepared group, was blown into a steep watercourse.
