Millinocket, Maine WARMER than Death Valley but BIG change by late week

With a western trough, eastern ridge this past weekend, we’ve seen unusually chilly and even snowy conditions from the Sierra to Wasatch with highs in north-central Nevada only mustering 45 degrees for a high but east of the Rockies and particularly east of the Mississippi and blistering heat was widespread on the other side of the jet. 100s sizzled the high plains Friday-Saturday while steamy 90s were felt right up against the Atlantic Coast.

Before the cold front arrived in the Upper Plains, temperatures climbed into the low 100s in the Dakotas and mid 90s in Minneapolis but a front pushing into this wall of hot, humid air only meant one thing… Big storms!

A few record highs were set in the Plains on Friday, including in Pierre, South Dakota (103 degrees), Valentine, Nebraska (102 degrees), Bismarck, North Dakota (101 degrees), Rapid City, South Dakota (99 degrees), and Minot, North Dakota (96 degrees – tied).

Several daily record highs were tied or broken in the north-central states on Saturday. Included were Pierre, South Dakota (103 degrees), Bismarck, North Dakota (101 degrees), Minot, North Dakota (96 degrees), and La Crosse, Wisconsin (96 degrees).

A wind gust of 69 mph recorded Sunday morning at Minneapolis-St Pail Intl Airport was the strongest gust ever recorded at the site in June.

Check out the contrast between interior West v East yesterday.

Amazingly, Millinocket, Maine’s 93 degrees was warmer than Death Valley, CA’s 91 degrees yesterday. How often does that happen in June I wonder? Also, the low of 59 degrees at McCarran Intl Airport, Las Vegas yesterday morning was lowest for June since 1999.

New Eastern heat records set Sunday and Monday.

The unusually cold upper low which dropped over 6 inches of snow around the Lake Tahoe area is on the move and sliding east providing a welcome cool down to the Plains and eventually the East all the while ridging rebuilds over the West where desert readings are set to climb into the 110s later this week, even hotter early next week.
