An anomalous negative AO pattern by early October standards is helping bring a fast start to winter across Siberia. Yes winter starts late September/early October in Arctic Russia but the current -AO is helping get the winter wheels in motion faster, stronger and ahead of this time last year.

Parts of Poland woke to snow this morning.

Bukowina Tatrzańska, Poland
Current Eurasia snow cover.

May not seem like much in the above chart now but pattern favours a lot more snow westwards through the next 10-20 days.

Easterly winds while chilly for Europe has limitations when there is bare ground. However snow cover expanding westward will expand and strengthen the Siberian high.
With the exception of North America, we have a cold Europe and Asia beneath strong high latitude blocking.
