Super Typhoon Vongfong deepened to 880mb last night and this could become a top 5 strongest tropical cyclone on record. We of course had the recurve of a strong typhoon within the last 5 days and this should drive trough No 1 down the Plains EARLY next week. Models have been all over this now for some time and could bring a dramatic flip in temperature departures over Texas. Highs of 100 at Fort Worth yesterday made it the hottest Oct day since 1979. By this time next week we could be talking record cool with highs only in the 50s, perhaps even some 40s.
What’s interesting is that the models are now showing a VERY deep trough dropping into the Pacific Northwest. I believe this would be the response of Vongfong’s recurve over or near Japan. The model suggests unusual cold and big mountain snowfall to the Pacific Northwest LATE next week.

With that depth of trough I wouldn’t rule out wet flakes reaching Seattle & Portland! Check out last night’s heavy N California snowfall with this.

Newest run of ECMWF still shows big early season PNW snow.

As well as potential snow and cold, there’s a LOT of rain printed out for the region by the models. Also note the big rains over parts of the Plains into Missouri and surrounding states. This is thanks to the combining of Simon and a series of cold front sweeping south.
