Written by on March 21, 2014 in United States of America with 0 Comments

We continue to monitor the upcoming onslaught of more winter and extreme weather. The type of cold on the way is more suited to mid winter with a 1040 arctic high set to drop out of Canada.

Temps will range between 20 and 40 below normal from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico by mid week while a potentially major coastal storm develops and bombs out off the New England coast.

The below ECMWF surface charts show how things come together. First, the arctic air dives south and becomes dominant, second we see a system forming over the Rockies which rides the base of the trough, third we have further upper energy streaming into the country from Alberta which eventually catches the system off it heads off the VA coast.

Just How Cold?

The air mass coming south this week will be extreme by late March but to put in context. This is a January-like air mass and will in fact bring temperatures that would be below normal even in Jnauary.

Here’s the ECMWF 500mb height anomaly next Wednesday. That’s a heck of a trough.
