90-100 mph winds screamed over the southern Republic causing 260, 000 in the Cork area along to loose power while on the other side of the choppy Irish Sea, winds were clocked at an amazing 108 mph at Aberdaron, Wales.
I believe that is the strongest relatively low level wind gust of the winter and as Meteorologist Matt Cardy who follows me on twitter stated, we’ve seen as many as 17 sub-960mb lows since December 1 and that count was before this and the last big storms. What an incredible winter we’ve had.
As the low shifts north, so too does the core of strongest winds. Gusts reached 83 mph at Blackpool while they were clocking 92 mph over the Pennines.
Conditions turns very poor in the North with rain, snow and gales while it improves further south.
Unfortunately the next deep low arrives as soon as Friday, likely taking a similar path and with potentially the same intensity, we could be facing winds just as strong as what we’ve seen today.
Here’s the ECMWF surface chart for today.
