Cold Now But Coldest Air Sweeps Into Midwest & East Next Week!

Well the snowstorm of yesterday has passed and what an impressive system it was. It was a record breaker for several spots including Philadelphia and New York where 13.5 and 11.5 inches fell respectively. Points just south of Boston saw upwards of 18 inches.

Here is the snow totals chart from AccuWeather.

Bitter cold enveloped the Northeast in the heels of that snow storm with highs failing to get above 20 from DC northwards.

You know your in for a very cold night when there’s snow on the ground, skies are clear and winds are falling light.

Here was the scene as the sun was setting over New York this afternoon.

And yes, even Kill Devil Hills, NC saw snow which stayed on the ground throughout today.

Lows are sure to get to between 0-5 degrees from Philadelphia up to Boston tonight but what’s interesting is the even colder push of air looming for early next week.

The GFS shows yet another clipper pushing south into the Midwest and East tomorrow into the weekend which will be more of a ‘snow shower producer’ rather than a big deal but what it may do is bring down some even colder air than we’re seeing now over the Northeast.

Notice in the GFS surface chart below for Friday, thicknesses drop to an incredible 498 as far south as NYC.

5,000ft temps are also colder than what they are for tonight and tomorrow morning.

While cold, the noteworthy aspect of the weather over the upcoming 48 to 96 hours will be the clipper systems which present further snow opportunities to the Midwest and Northeast and beyond that, MAJOR COLD comes acalling with the real possibility of the COLDEST AIR YET pushing through Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh and New York.

The next clipper in line sweeps through the Lakes and eventually the Northeast Saturday.

Then another follows Sunday before a third follows by that Monday and that could spell more East Coast trouble. This is likely to be a bigger deal once again for the East Coast.

The last clipper looks to get it’s act together and gains strength just like the latest system. This could bring a further several inches to the big cities and dependant upon exact track, it be either impact DC or points further north, say from Philly or even missing the major cities altogether. The best guess right now is that all least part of the urban I-95 is affected.

By Tuesday AM, the system which likely feeds back, like we saw with the system of the past 24 hours, pushes offshore, the coldest air to date likely sweeps in.

Tuesday morning temps are projected to drop into the -20 to -25 degree range in Minneapolis and not far off in Chicago.
