After some respite across the US from the extreme cold to start January, the pattern is resetting and going back to where it was to start 2014. The Pacific high is intensifying once again and so the cold now over the Plains and Midwest will grow deeper next week. The current ridge-trough set is such that the cold over the Midwest is a more typical brand for the time of year but as the ridge begins to build up into Alaska, the Pacific air that’s currently mixing with the NW flow, will get cut off.
That flow driving a series of clippers south will begin to tap the pure arctic air this weekend and drill it south into the Midwest next week. Expect the pattern to go to the extreme mid next week to mid the following week. The cold may get to the same bitter depths as the last outbreak.

First we must replenish some of that snow cover. The clippers will help bring a lot of reflective white to many including the Ohio Valley and Northeast.
