Today a frontal system will bring rain to parts of Ireland, England, Wales and Southwest Scotland but it’s another front edging into NW Scotland which is the door to the coldest air of the season. As high pressure builds north over the Atlantic, so that front will push south during tomorrow, pulling the first arctic air mass of the season south with it. By Tuesday the front will be down over the English Channel.
As well as the cold, heavy snow is expected over the Highlands with low level snow showers. In the heavier showers, don’t be surprised to see brief coatings down to low levels. The Southern Uplands may also see accumulation. The higher sections of the M8, M74 and most definitely the A9 could see travel issues due to snow and or ice.
What’s interesting is the potential for accumulating snow over eastern Britain towards mid week as low pressure drops into the North Sea with precipitation turning to snow as it meets the cold air.
Here’s Monday’s GFS surface chart and you can see the fronts beginning their southward journey over Scotland.

During Tuesday the arctic air flow is well established with northerly winds drawing the coldest air of the season south. This will keep daytime temperatures in the 2-4C range throughout the Northern UK with snow showers

After a very cold night with widespread severe frost, during Wednesday a 988mb low passes to the north, likely throwing snow showers south over Scotland and the North of England as well as Northern Ireland. Highs will have a tough time reaching freezing throughout the day for many and with any wind, it will feel like it’s below freezing.

It will be just as cold with snow in the air over Belgium and the Netherlands by this stage too.
Midweek Snow Event For Eastern England/Belgium/Netherlands?
By later Wednesday that low which crosses north of Scotland will drop south over the North Sea. With moisture and wind from the low pushing into the cold driving south down over the UK, one must wonder about the possibility of an accumulating snow event over and to the east of the Pennines as well as over parts of Belgium and the Netherlands. Strong winds could create blowing and drifting over higher ground. Eastern Scotland may also see sticking snow too.

Check out the 96 hour GFS snow chart. Model has ‘blue’ showing up over eastern England as well as the near continent, meaning it’s trying to see sticking snow, perhaps rain along the coast but an inch or two at low levels over England while 3-6 inches is plausible, given the charts above and below for inland Belgium and the Netherlands, maybe 2-4 over the higher ground of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Durham with 6 inches over the tops of the Pennines.
