Another Snowstorm Looms For US Northern Tier, More Will Follow!

We need the current pattern is very favourable for plenty more wild endgame to winter weather but I thought I would show you what’s next.

Modelling has been persistent is bringing a low across the Northern Tier, producing a solid 4-8, locally 12 inch snow through the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin and northern Michigan but this would be less of an event for the Northeast with the exceptions of perhaps northern New York and New England.

Here’s the latest 500mb chart by next Tuesday which shows a fairly decent system crossing the Lower Lakes, by no means the deepest low but this would produce a decent snowstorm to the Upper Midwest including Minneapolis and Chicago.

Here’s the surface chart for the same period. Note the 540 line displaced well to the south. This would drag a a decent cold shot down the Plains and into the Midwest in it’s wake.

It’s worth pointing out those thicknesses diving into the Midwest. Note the 510 line diving over Minnesota. With the AO in the tank and a lot of extremely cold air sitting over central Canada, this would drop south in the wake of the system. Don’t be surprised to see perhaps some records being set next week with Minneapolis perhaps eyeing 0 once again.

Once that system heads up into Ontario, the cold spreads in a slightly weakened for into the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, though still plenty cold for mid-March.

By late next week the model shows a tremendous push of Pacific energy slamming into the West Coast, there’s your next winter storm coming into California once again.

Expect a lot of rain for much of the West Coast from Seattle to LA.

Finally here’s the 500mb out at 240 hrs and note the storm over the centre of the country. This will likely bring a decent Plains snowstorm. Again, look out for some significant late season cold to come down once this thing swings up towards the eastern Lakes.

Also worth pointing out is the potential for secondary development off the East Coast. With the strongly negative NAO, that is a real possibility.
