In the wake of the crippling blizzard which stretched from Germany to the UK with most extreme impacts seen across Northern France, major cold set in over the freshly laid snowpack to produce a mid-winter level deep freeze. Beneath clear skies and light winds, temperatures plummeted to a record -12C or 9F overnight in Brussels, Belgium. According to FlandersNews.Be, this marks the coldest March 13th in 167 years and according to @WassimCornet, this is the coldest so late in Brussels since 1847!
In the Netherlands, the village of Ell saw a record low of -13C this morning, breaking the old record of -9.7C set in 1962. Eindhoven fell to -12C.

Bitter cold covers Scandinavia down through Germany, the Low Countries, France and the UK with more intense lows and possible records likely in coming nights where the snow lies.
The pattern remains highly favourable for producing yet more wild and mid-winter level snow and cold through the second half of March. With a slight reprieve towards the weekend in the UK and Ireland, as early as next week, arctic air returns with the help of a negative NAO and tanking AO. In fact the cold looks set to return just as strong early next week.
The setup looks very similar to what we’ve just seen and so don’t be surprised if we see another headline grabbing snow situation across Europe next week.
