Just want to show you quickly how over the next 16 days the warmth will get erased right across the Lower 48. The blizzard which has all but shut down parts of the Midwest is the first in a series of storms from now through early January that will lay down that carpet of white. By New Year, as much as 60% of the US could be snow covered as another two storms following the current one will track further south to fill in the bare ground. With each system, the cold air will grow deeper as the snow will encourage this cold south from Canada.
Check out the initial 2-M temp anomaly off the GFS. Note the warmth in the East and over the Northern Rockies.

Now take a look at the next full 16 days. What a turnaround. See what happens when you start this type of pattern when there is a tremendous amount of cold just sitting and building over the snowfields of Canada. We’ve had everything in place, just needed this pattern to kick into gear which it is now doing. I fly to New York on January 4th and recon I will be met by snow and plenty of cold for my 2 week visit. Even when I take a road trip down to Savannah, GA, I don’t recon it will be all that warm given what’s evolving. By the way, what is now kicking in may be here for much of January and this is the type of pattern shift that can produce a significant arctic attack a few weeks down the road. Amazing what happens when you start laying down snow isn’t it.
