In recent days, we have started to see more and more reports come out of Asia about how cold it has been. I have tried to show you what’s been going on there so you grasp what is going on globally and not just locally. The core of cold has been centred over the heart of Russia and down into Kazakhstan where it has been just insane how cold it’s been.
What I’ve alluded to you briefly is the fact that although it will remain brutally cold, it does ease, with the core of this coldest air becoming stretched out as the northern blocking alters.
Here’s the next 5 days over Asia, wow!

But, check out days 8-16, notice the warming across the very areas that were coldest.

Now look at this global chart for days 8-16 days, note Asia is warmer but the cold over this continent is further south but cast your eyes of the USA. Firstly look at the strength and position of the block, it now favours arctic air into the Lower 48, especially with a larger expanse of snowcover by early January. The strong blocking over northeast Canada and a favourable pattern over Asia may well direct the coldest air over the hemisphere into the United States during the next 25 days. Parts of Russia and Kazakhstan will get a break from the persistent 40-50F below normal readings.
