It has been a particularly cold period for Interior Alaska with dominant arctic high pressure which has kept the cold in and any weather including snowfall, out. The temperature in Fairbanks, Alaska has been steadily falling since late November and last month was one of the coldest November’s on record.
This month may end up being one of the coldest December’s too. Sunday marked the coldest day yet with a low of -43°, the high, if you can call it that was a bone-chilling -37° but then came this morning and it was even colder. A low -48°F marked the coldest December reading in Fairbanks since 1999 and amazingly the coldest Pre-Christmas temperature since 1977 when a low of -52° was recorded.

So far today, the temperature remains at -41° and you can see a live view from Downtown Fairbanks above off the arctic cam. Can I just say, that image says it all.. doesn’t it look brrr! It may stay near 40° below today with another dip into the mid -40s tonight. While the Lower 48 enjoys mild December weather, Alaska has been brutally cold, it was the same throughout last winter.
Alaska endured a long and tough winter in 2011-2012 while it was downright balmy down south. The city last winter also endured it’s first 50 below since I believe the early 2000s and the winter before even had some tough times.
Winter’s bite may loosen it’s grip later this week as ridging tries to push milder air north. This in turn will work some of this brutal cold south into the Lower 48.
