EASTER OUTLOOK 2025: Unsettled, Settled Mix!

Written by on April 15, 2025 in Uncategorized with 0 Comments

The run-up to Easter 2025 is an increasingly unsettled one following weeks of dry high pressure dominance.

Unfortunately this outlook has had to be produced earlier than usual and so the details discussed below for the day-to-day breakdown is likely to change so this is merely a rough guide to the weather conditions expected for the upcoming Easter weekend.

Much of March and through the first 12 days of April has been firmly dominated by high pressure with warmer and much drier than normal conditions experienced across the majority of the UK and Ireland.

Unfortunately for most, the high we’ve become use to seeing with it’s clear skies presenting chilly morning’s and pleasantly warm afternoons has slide south allowing the return of the Atlantic westerlies.

As pressure falls, so the vertical air flow reverses from sinking to rising and the increasingly widespread development of showers. These showers containing rain (some heavy) along with hail and with height, sleet and snow.

COOL, WET & WINDY MID WEEK

The run-up to the long holiday weekend becomes increasingly unsettled as a low pressure circulation drifts north from Biscay to bring the first real ‘wet & windy’ spell in some time with pressure bottoming out in the upper 980s in millibars with tightening of the isobars bringing coastal gales through Wednesday to S/E Ireland, S/W England and Wales.

Stronger updrafts near or on the core’s northern and eastern flank is likely to generate embedded thunderstorms and downpours for particularly England, possibly into Wales and even S Ireland Wednesday PM, aided by some surface warming.

The low gradually drifts north into S Scotland as we progress through Wednesday aft/eve into early Thursday with frequent showers or longer spells of rain for much of Scotland and N Ireland.

Wednesday/Thursday sees sleet and snow possible over the tops of the UK and N Ireland’s highest ground.

GOOD FRIDAY

Models suggest another low drifts north over Ireland or between Ireland and UK bringing further thundery showers and longer spells of rain with further gusty winds.

At this stage (very much subject to adjustment) the worst of the rain looks to focus over Ireland, N Ireland as possibly the western side of the UK, drier and less unsettled with even more sunshine central and eastern England and Scotland.

SATURDAY/EASTER SUNDAY

I’ve bunched both Saturday and Easter Sunday together because at this stage, there is fairly good model agreement that ‘higher’ pressure builds in bringing less shower activity and brighter conditions for the majority of both UK and Ireland with low pressure well offshore. While the air mass is cool, the increasingly strong mid/late April sunshine should make it feel pleasant providing winds remain fairly light which I expect they will. Showers and winds is likely on the increase into Easter Sunday evening as pressure falls with low pressure incoming.

EASTER MONDAY

With the potentially ‘more settled’ Saturday-Sunday (drier, brighter) lower pressure returns for Easter Monday, esp Scotland/N England. While forecasting specifics nearly a week ahead is pure guess work, I would suggest the return of showers wind driven rain from the east as low pressure drifts into Scotland from the North Sea. Showers for N England, perhaps further south.
