We knew it was going to be an unusually warm day and it was just that. On the western fringes of the Cairngorm Mountains, the town of Aviemore started off Wednesday at a comfortable 9.3C at 3am. By 9am, the thermometer shot up to 23.6C and by 12 noon 28.7C.
Between 1 and 2pm the thermometer cracked the 30C mark which officially made today Aviemore’s warmest June day on record, Scotland’s warmest June day since 1995 and Scotland’s warmest since 2013. As of this writing, the thermometer is currently sitting on 31C, perilously close to the town’s all-time record of 31.3C.

Meanwhile, 12 miles to the east and at an elevation of 4,085ft, Cairn Gorm summit has topped 20C (68F). This is the summit’s warmest day in at least 16 years. The average June high is 7.1C. In just yesterday’s post I wrote and shared images of the snow, 105 mph winds and 2C highs recorded on this summit just 6 days ago.
