We are gradually climbing out of last week’s freezer with each day turning that little bit milder. However it’s not without a few bumps. Mild hitting cold is bringing further snow and some localised disruption.
It was our turn again here in Central Scotland back on Tuesday then today it’s been parts of Central England as milder, moist air lifts north into the left over cold air. The good thing is, at this time of year you’ve got lengthening days and in sun and no wind you can feel the warmth off those rays. At night, well it can certianly still get cold.
Like tonight for example.

The Tuesday morning rush was a nightmare across the Cumbernauld and Kirkintilloch area of central Scotland…

The good thing is we’re back in a more typical brand of March cold and so snow struggles at low levels and even at high levels thins quickly.
So, warming up by the weekend? Thank a northward jogging low pressure circulation near the Azores which could potentially bring us our mildest air of 2018. 15.1C is the reading to beat and that’s possible with enough sunshine.

Could see quite the north-south contrast Saturday morning with the cold under clear skies across Scotland and mild, moist, damp air moving north over England, Wales and Ireland.

We may see some snow on the leading edge over the highest ground but the mild spreads all the way north, moderating over Scotland.

By later Monday, the latest run of the GFS has the low over the North Sea and this would suggest a push of colder air back south but with much more ‘run of the mill’ March cold.

Now the GFS solution does tend to support more lows tracking NNE slightly west or over the UK which puts us within the milder flow.

However, given the amount of cold air within the mid latitudes, I believe cold will try to fight back in a lag from the SSW.
I think there’s a nagging cool pattern shaping up mid and late March and through much of April and this weekend’s mild is more a blip than a sign of things to come.
The CFSv2 weeklies may be on to something with a cool north, mild south UK next couple of weeks and then building cool late March and through at least the first half of April.
