Earl made landfall early this morning (Thursday) as a Category 1 hurricane near Belize City causing wind damage and flooding from rain and storm surge. Interestingly, Earl is only the 3rd August hurricane landfall in Belize history. The last time? 1918 and the only one prior was way back in 1864. So this landfall in this part of the […]
Jim Cantore tweeted earlier today on how the Northeast, Southeast drought has worsened slightly in the last week. Thought I would take a look. There’s the 1-week difference. Here’s the reason for such dry conditions currently. The below 90-day precipitation anomaly says it all. July 2016 was one of the driest on record for the Southeast. It’s been warm […]

We continue with the up and down, highly progressive Atlantic-Europe pattern but there are some positive signs growing in the medium range (6-10 day) of widespread height rises and summer-like warmth returning. Has it arrived you say? Low pressure this weekend brings wind, rain and for SE England, heat and humidity. The first low is immediately followed by another […]

We’ve witnessed significant flooding over parts of the Desert Southwest and specifically the Phoenix area in recent days. This flash flooding caused by 2 inch per hour rainfall forced water rescues and school, business and road closures yesterday. This pattern continues tonight, tomorrow and Friday as moisture continues to wrap around a strong Colorado high. As the arid desert land heats fast and furious through the […]
We now have 75 mph Hurricane Earl, only just been upgraded within the past hour. Nice image capturing an outer band from Earl approaching Isla San Pedro, Belize. Image by Roy Ek. Further up the coast and this is the scene in beautiful Mahahaul, Mexico. Cozumel, Mexico [s2If current_user_can(access_s2member_level1)] This system is expected to become […]

Nice visible satellite presentation of what’s likely our deepest low of the summer thus far. Expect coastal and high elevation gales through today with frequent heavy showers packing hail and thunder. Note the main front to the south pretty much connects Europe with North America, it’s cold and refreshing to the north, warm and muggy to […]
