Written by on February 19, 2015 in United States of America, Winter 2014/15 with 4 Comments

The extreme cold talked about here for days, even weeks is now firmly established over the Eastern US. Records lows went all the way to the Gulf Coast this morning but tonight is sure to be even colder with a shot at 0 degrees from NYC down to DC for the first time since February 1994.

This morning was the first of TWO truly frigid morning’s.

Temps are struggling to rise this afternoon as the core of cold establishes over the TN Valley. The frigid base to commence tonight’s sharp cooling after sunset means an even colder night is in store.

Dew points represent the depth of cold in place and also could hint at where temps will go tonight.

The ECMWF shows a stronger, colder trough with lower thicknesses than any time this winter. For instance the 3 degree reading in New York’s Central Park a few days ago came with thicknesses around 499/500dm over NYC but the model has the 498 line all the way south to Baltimore and the 492 line to Philadelphia. This suggests that NYC, Philly and even DC could hit 0 or lower tonight for the first time since 1994.

MANY towns and cities will get to 0 or lower away from the Atlantic and north of say Nashville, TN.

MAJORLY cold temps tonight for Kentucky and Tennessee and by that I mean we could see -20s in the mountains and even North Carolina may be included. We may also hit 32 all the way to Orlando for the first time in years tonight!

Great Lakes ice cover now up to 85.4%.

Lake Superior is now said to be over 91% covered while Lake Ontario is 82%. What’s significant about Lake Ontario is that it was less than 20% covered last year yet the Lakes were eventually 92% covered. The most since winter of 78-79.

That’s it for tonight. Be safe and I will have more for you tomorrow morning. Oh and check out the video for the discussion.

Does, weather continue THIS crazy for Nashville area?

    What about for Scotland? UK?

We’re being sandblasted with wind driven ice right now. Alternate heavy cold rain. Slashes windows.

Will work on pics. Good idea….

To be honest, I don’t see why not. March is looking COLD over the Eastern and Southeastern US and like last year, I see it remaining cold with snow well into spring. More on spring in coming posts, Kathleen. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

    Amazing! Thanks…

No cars have made it up or down our pristine white track-free Hill overlooking West Nashville since SAT 14 FEB (except for a very brief interlude yesterday).

Hill climbs to altitude ~870′ . Neighbors cooperate in getting out to get supplies from alley way garages (450′ lower in altitude and flat) to & from stores then haul loot through homes (outdoor tracks are too slippery) carefully into their pantries.

Since this morning FRI FEB 20 it has returned to its pastoral but treacherously slippery snow covered surface.

We are under an 18 hr. ice storm warning until later tomorrow with up to 0.50″+ ice cover to (hopefully) finish off this fun with 24 hrs of icy cold rain. PARTY!!!

Now if the power will just hold out… Who thought life in the South could be so much fun!

Then there’s that cold all next week… Breathe! Stay calm!
