Focus Of Snow & Cold Takes Aim At Turkey/Greece, Atlantic Gearing Up For UK Assault Again!

Where’s all our snow and cold gone you ask? Try Turkey and Greece! A vigorous low spinning over eastern Turkey and the Med isn’t just tapping some very cold continental air and driving it into the Med but moisture associated is bringing heavy snowfall too with blizzards likely in the mountains of Greece and particularly Turkey.

The ECMWF model suggests a widespread foot of snow is possible and this includes the capital of Istanbul.

Meanwhile, here in Western Europe, our pattern remains quiet, however that’s likely to change towards this weekend and next week. As the trough deepens over Greenland and descends into the Atlantic, so the mean ridge gets pushed east into the continent, opening the door up to a more fluid and unsettled pattern for the UK and near continent. How far east systems get remains to be seen as the ridge will hold pretty strong.

What I am watching is the extreme cold set to take aim at eastern North America. With a more active west to east jet stream and systems spawning from the NA side, we need to watch the backside of these lows as they can bring an increased threat of snow showers again.

Here’s the ECMWF surface charts through the next 10 days and notice the return of systems back into the UK and Western Europe and the transport of cold from North America on their rear. We’re likely going back to the setup we had earlier in the winter.
